Surprising Human Creature O surprising human creature, o you strange man, Obstinately chasing for dreams – as bright as sun, You grope along with candle light in obscure space, You grope in the dark but don’t believe in the darkness…
Through the mist of your tears – heavy and wan, You are eager to see the rays of rising dawn. Still in love, under the vail of deep mourning, You suffer but do not believe in suffering.
Having heavy chain on your neck and being handcuffed, You are trying to soar so high that eagle can’t. In the huge jail of human life, heavily chained, You cannot breath but don’t believe you are enchained.
Thorns and thistles make you bleed on all your ways, But your wounded fingers caress flowers always Trying to find the beauty’s bright spirit’s arcane, You roar from pain but don’t believe in your own pain.
O surprising human creature, o you strange man, Your hands entomb so many lives in your lifespan... The wind of death blows on your face, chilly and wet, You fall breathless but in decease don’t believe yet.

Moushegh Ishkhan (1914 - 1990) Մուշեղ Իշխան Moushegh Ishkhan is a well-known western Armenian poet, novelist, play writer and educator. Orphaned during the Armenian Genocide at the age of two, he was raised in Beirut, Lebanon. In 1938-1940 he studied at the University of Brussels. His first book of poems was published in 1936. He authored 17 books: plays, novels, and a series of textbooks on Armenian literature in addition to his well-known poetry. |
